Question by Jamie’s Mommy: Is the yogurt “diet” safe to do while breast feeding?
I love yogurt and usually have one cup thing a day for breakfast.

I just found out about a “diet” where you eat 3 things a day. http://www.webmd.com/diet/features/french-womens-diet-secret-yogurt

But, I’m not completely sure its ok to do.

Is it? Has anyone done this and lost weight? (Breast feeding isn’t helping me lose weight.)

dieting is fine while you’re breastfeeding (as long as you’re not taking some crazy diet pills). and if you’d like, continue to take your prenatal vitamins while you nurse.

What do you think? Answer below!

You need to check with a lactation consultant, but loosing more than 1-2 pounds a week can release toxins into your milk supply that can hurt your baby. The best way is to control your portions and exercise daily for at least 45min to an hour. With this and nursing you should start to see some improvement. The best way is to eat every 3 hours a small portion. This way you will keep your metabolism in high gear so you have energy to take care of yourself by exercising and your baby. Its hard, but I have lost all my baby weight and some with every pregnancy. I have a four month old and have already lost 35lbs in 4 months doing this and i feel great. make sure and keep taking your prenatals. You dont want to be drained of your vitamins. With milk and cheese those are some real weight gainers. Go to the lowest fat milk and dont eat as much cheese.

If you want to check on this it tells you this i belive in the what to expect when expecting the end where it talks about the post par. my Lac. Cons. also told me this. the toxins come from your muscles

I have spoken with my lactaion cons. and she told me that the way i stated was a great way to take care of yourself, and poses no risk for you or the baby. Check out this website for help with nursing questions such as this: http://www.llli.org/

No diet is “safe” or recommended while breastfeeding as it limits the calories you can spare your little one…and dieting actually makes your body STOP burning calories and storing up fat. mainly because it thinks it’s starving. You should be still at the same intake you were while pregnant or just a bit under…you’re still eating for 2.

This doesn’t sound so much like a “diet” as just adding yogurt into your diet. Yogurt is very good for you, but be aware that most commercially sold yogurts have crazy amounts of sugar. Try plain yogurts, and add jam that’s made with all fruit, or add honey, vanilla extract, granola, nuts, etc. In fact, one of my favorites is this:

Soak RAW (not roasted!) almonds in clean water for 24 hours in the fridge, changing the water after ~12 hours.

Chop up a few (3-4) almonds.

Take 8oz yogurt, 2 spoonfuls of honey, a capful or two (depending on your taste) of vanilla, and the chopped almonds. Stir until the honey has incorporated into the yogurt. Voila! Breakfast!

You can also substitute a fruit-juice sweetened jam for the honey and vanilla.

I also like to take the frozen white grape-peach juice, thaw it in the fridge, and use a few spoonfuls of that to sweeten and flavor plain yogurt.

When choosing a yogurt, you must look for LIVE ACTIVE CULTURES, the more the better.

Healthiest yogurts available include: Stonyfield Farms, Brown Cow, Nancy’s, Mountain High. Least healthy are the Dannon, yoplait, etc.

If you don’t want to mix all that stuff into yogurt, look for yogurts with a sugar content of less than 35mg, and make sure it’s sweetened with sugar, honey, agave, or fruit juice, NOT corn syrup!

This isn’t really a diet but incorporating yogurt into the foods you eat. It is very healthy to eat yogurt everyday as long as you stay away from all of the commercial crap brands. Most are not good for you because of sugar content plus barely have any live cultures. Go for a yogurt that is either plain or sweetened naturally with honey, cane juice, etc. Also make sure it has multiple live cultures in it. I eat wallaby or stoneyfield farm yogurt every morning with a granola bar.

Please don’t think of breastfeeding as a “diet” though. It is not going to make you lose weight and for some people it can make them carry an extra 10 lbs or so – I happen to be one of those women :-(

Your son is only a couple of months old, it will take at least a year to take off that weight. I’m still about 10 lbs over and my daughter is 14 months and I’m still nursing very frequently. I eat healthy, exercise but my body has changed. My chest alone is still about a cup size up and I read some where that a cup size is equal to about 10 lbs so there you go!

The best thing you can do is eat small healthy meals (including yogurt) and to exercise.
